Complicated New year Resolutions

December holidays are always that time you get to rest and have a break from tiring work schedules, annoying but lovely people and have a chance to spend quality fun time with beloved family and friends.  So it is no surprise that we get to hope and assume that December might never end and that the new year is still a few more weeks away. Alas! the new year is here! (Yeah, Am Still adjusting too)

it's 2017

2017 represents a lot for different people. For some, It’s a new beginning, a continuation of normal day to day life and for most of us it’s a second chance to pursue what we failed to achieve in 2016.  Let it be changing our lifestyles, getting the nerve to ask that girl out or finally get the man of our dreams and probably a wedding! NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS are always complicated.

funny-new-years-resolutionEvery new year, I hear some friends of mine announce new year Resolutions like ‘this year am not eating burgers and fries. I have to cut my weight.’ (we all have that friend don’t we?)  It’s things like deciding to start gym this year and then spend six months planning to start, that make new year resolutions complicated. Most of us NEVER PLAN to move our plans forward but keep fantasizing with so many ideas and let our dreams die in the night. (If you do plan, please don’t judge the rest of us)

My mentor (God bless her!), gave me a book to read last year and it’s from that book and her guiding words and principles that am going to briefly let you on three secrets to help you start the journey on putting your new year Resolutions into motion.

If you are like me, then you have struggled in the past with chasing some of your goals and ended up panicking and getting confused on how to turn those dreams into reality. I have many times looked back and wondered why the hell I didn’t do this or that?  Then the year ends and I am swallowed by regret, frustration and anger. This is the under achieving cycle that most of us live in. A cycle that impedes you from attaining your full potential!

boton_1The first thing I have done, (I hope you try this out) is an individual assessment.(try to be ruthlessly honest here) List down all your main achievements for the last three years. This includes personal and professional milestones. From there, turn the page and write down all missed opportunities and the wrong choices you have made, especially those things you know you could have avoided. (That list might really shock you, but stay strong)

Compare the two lists and then write down where you would like to see yourself in the next three to five years if everything was perfect .This is your vision, your dream. Visualize all your achievements, steps to take and the people to get you there. These are your GOALS for 2017 and beyond. Don’t forget to set time lines or you will be working on one thing for twenty years.

2-1The next step is really up to me or you. After setting your goals, you need to have maintain consistence in action towards achieving your goals.  This has been a challenge for me and probably yourself but this year try to set up a system to help you be consistent toward achieving your goals. My mentor told me to make sure I do something contributing to my goals every day, however small.

This helps to keep your goals and vision alive and clear in your mind. As humans beings, we get distracted and forget. Try to stay on track with reminding yourself that your dreams are in motion and achievable. As my mentor might put it, drive the conversation.

3-24The third and final but clearly not last step is always pray. I am a religious person and for me Islam as my religion, teaches me to be thankful, patient, humble and helpful among so many other things.  So through prayer, I am able to remember that I need to be thankful to God for my health, family and friends, plus my Job (which we all want to keep) and life as you or I know it.

new-year-3This is probably one of the most important things to consistently do this year. Religion and perhaps culture limit us from loosing ourselves to ambition and wealth. In this journey to a better life, I try not to loose myself because it’s easy to do so.  Usually, the ‘I’ ll do whatever it takes phrase ‘ is quite a misleading one.

So I don’t know what you are doing now, but am definitely going off to set my goals, try my best to be consistent and always pray. Hopefully, I shall have less complicated New year Resolutions for 2018. What are you going to do?

QUEEN OF KATWE: a checkmate to Uganda’s film industry

Most biopic films I have watched always drain me emotionally (yeah, am an emotional guy). I leave the cinema either so sad and worried that I might not be appreciating the little I get to eat of matoooke and the famous rolex (not the watch) or that life is too deep and I have been just too shallow all along! Queen of Katwe left me inspired, happy, truly impressed and motivated.

null

‘You belong where you believe you belong’ David Oyelowo’s character in the film tries to encourage the young Phiona Mutesi (played by Madiina Nalwanga). As a film maker myself, these words and the film in it’s beauty reminded me that Uganda is so ready to tell more stories on the silver screen. I remember turning to my bro in the cinema and saying, ‘I want to see at least five decent films screening from Uganda in the next few years.’

Queen of Katwe tells a ‘never give up story‘ of chess champion Phiona Mutesi in a fun, true and heartfelt way. Phiona’s life is changed after growing interest in playing chess. Against deprived childhood, Phiona Mutesi strives on to become a grand master under the selfless guidance of her coach Robert Katende.

I didn’t have interest in chess (probably because I prefer video games) but while watching this vividly  relatable film, my interest in the game has grown miraculously. This is what Queen of Katwe does so effortlessly : the film makers sway away from the tired formula of the sad nonredeemable poor Africa story and embrace the purity of a place I proudly call home.  Even though Phiona is poor and  barely has a home, she and her family are happy. They  depend and support each other no matter what.

I am just a girl who sells maize on the street. I  can’t win.’ Phiona Mutesi ‘s character cries out to her coach after loosing a big game in Russia. He replies ‘reset the pieces and play again‘.

Mira Nair (the film director) stayed true to a beautiful story with a stellar cast and authentic locations that captured the spirit of Uganda.  With her seasoned experience, she was able to turn naive Ugandan kids into Hollywood stars.

Madiina Nalwanga, Martin Kabanza and Taryn Kay manage to convincingly act along side Oscar winner Lupita Nyongo and David Oyelewo. Veteran actors Phillip Luswata, Peter Odeke, Richard Tuwanje and so many other Ugandan actors and crew members got an opportunity to work on a major studio picture. Thank you Disney for taking a leap!

Checkmate. This film does win for me this year. As a Ugandan, filmmaker and a believer that dreams truly come true.

Currently, the film industry in Uganda is struggling but improving. In order to finance and make short or feature films, some passionate indie-film makers I know have risked their jobs, money and relationships (true story. People have been dumped).  This never give up story is on going and with major international studios like Disney getting interest, the future is bright people. The future is bright.

Ugandan audiences have always had a negative attitude towards home made movies preferring the Hollywood blockbusters and Nigerian dramas. This lack of belief and support in our own has let so many untold stories die in the night as discouraged film makers have been pushed into other businesses.

If more quality movies like Queen of Katwe are made, this am sure will encourage the makers and the guys with the money to bring our stories to the silver screen.

queen-of-katwe

note: please go see the movie in cinema, if you want more of our stories told on an international level. (Yeah, movies that don’t make money, don’t encourage big studios into making more)

Eating My Rolex.

Wandegeya. Bwaise. Nakawa. (Am not a TAXI conductor calling for passengers) These city points have fed we bachelors, university students and anyone lazy enough not to cook or broke to dine out. From roasted chicken, Katogo, pilau, the famous Rolex and a cup of tea, porridge or Bushera, your preference is always taken care of.

Rolex

Street food fed me for over five years and I write this article today with pain that all these mini street restaurant chefs have not been helped to move their businesses to the next level. Mid 2015, KCCA (Kampala City council Authority for non Ugandans and those who care little about this country) started a campaign to remove street vendors pushing them towards a more organized working space, Wandegeya market. This is a good thing, but again not most can afford the rent or the loss of the ‘am in hurry’ street customers. If only we start creating new innovations rather than always depend on the old tactics and styles of solving problems.

Day by day, street Food in Kampala becomes a culture  and most city dwellers prefer to buy a Rolex from the street than enter a market or restaurant for a meal. A walk with your girlfriend, grab a Rolex and walk on home. The feeling of sitting in an open space with cars, people and the night zooming past you is a million shilling experience. New York, France, UK and so many cities have turned street food into a clean and lucrative food business. Kampala needs to join this club!

street-food-in-new-york     JS46099526

The one thing that used to throw me off street food was hygiene. ( I know..that dirty guy making you a Rolex with those hands that have been…God knows where! Touched money and other unmentionables). To be able to enjoy a meal. You have to be at peace with how it was made ( Have you ever checked that Kitchen from your favorite restaurant?). GET this, food is food and fortunately there are some folks that have really upgraded their game in hygiene, customer service and packaging. Making street food ‘corporate’ as the saying goes.

So after CNN made the ROLEX popular to the world, Uganda is embracing the so called broke fast food  and now come this August, 2016 a ROLEX FESTIVAL is coming up. (Banage Ugandans can wait for permission to embrace their things!) Don’t be left behind, get with the program ROLEX. I f you thought PIZZA HUT was big, wait for ROLEX CORNER. Now that the minister of tourism is launching rolex as a tourist attraction, things won’t be same again.

TAXI MADNESS

A large number of Kampala city dwellers (like myself) use a Taxi on a daily or regular basis. (this excludes those allergic to taxis and Bodaboda die hards) The one thing you can’t take away from city taxis are the bad habits displayed with pride.

Am not saying don’t be your self but please always remember to behave in a public accepted manner as your mama told you to.

I think some of us have used taxis for so long that we think we are at home after boarding one. (remember that moment when a taxi conductor called you by name? Yes,  you are the  customer of the month.)

Not everyone can afford to own a personal car and that’s accepted. So for all public transport users this is my letter to you.

I know that as friends, you need to chat while in transit but dear taxi passengers stop conversing at the top of your voices with a friend seated at the back and you in the front seat. Before I forget, edit your kaboozi because some of us are under 18 or really not interested. Mbu ‘do you know Taata Simon is not interested anymore!‘ Why?  Really why?

IMG_0055You had a long day and stopped by a restaurant or kafunda on your way home and bought a Rolex or boiled maize. We understand you are extremely hungry and can’t wait to chew on that maize, but before you do STOP! Taxis are not restaurants and neither are they your living room (leave those things to buses)

Some of you have bad chewing habits and others just let out gas after.  So dear passenger,  don’t suffocate  the rest of us with bad food odors. Eat at home.

To all of you who need to sit at the front, kindly be aware that taxi seats are not reserved. When the next customer boards,  Kindly move OVER don’t hold the entire taxi because you have to move out, let the next customer… (you get the point, the sentence is tiring already)  FYI, this applies to all seats in the taxi.

Then to point out the obvious, everyone likes fresh air. If  you have a window seat, try to leave it open. Kampala taxis have no air conditioning neither does every passenger own a Chris Adams perfume.

Okay, I have ranted enough to my fellow taxi users. I know you have some bad habits you hate too. So comment below and lets try to better our taxi experience.

Tagging a price to beauty

I want a TALL, HANDSOME and RICH MAN who will love me for me. (For real?) When we are busy tagging beauty, wealth and so many other nitty gritty conditions to the people we want to end up with, lets pause for a moment and look at ourselves.

MAN or WOMAN we always have fantasies and dreams of the love of our life but for so many of us reality checks in and substantial factors like character, beliefs and other ‘important’ things about him/her make our choice easy to see.

Get me right, I am not asking you to lower your standards because I will not lower mine. Take the time to realize that if I can love you the way you want to be loved, at the end of the day I’ll expect to be loved the way I want to be loved. (confused?) If a girl/woman will only feel loved after a routine of expensive gifts, pillow talk, a night out or having a powerful man by her side then gentlemen you have to deliver. Same goes for the dudes, he may only feel loved after you give him space when he needs it, readily avail yourself for sex, and probably always look hot and sexy. (Dating is a job people.)

Most of us are attracted by beauty and here beauty is not only what we see but character, belief and so much about a person. This ‘beauty‘ is not for sale but for appreciation and reservation.

We are raised differently but later meet as strangers and try to co exist as we learn more and more about the other and the common mistake we achieve exceedingly is not trying to learn more at this job called dating.

Let’s not ask our loved ones to miraculously fit into our single life routines because they chose to be with you. When you ask her or him to change their lives for you, you are tagging a price to your beauty.

Dating or marriage should not have tags because if we go that route, then compromise, understanding will have no place in relationships. Cloths, shoes and so many merchandise are tagged for the customer not a life partner, friend or family.

Your beauty is priceless, keep it that way. (in today’s economy, prices can go up or down the next day)

The Museveni Era Continues… (PART 1)

With 60.75% of Uganda’s voters saying yes to him, congratulations are in order to H.E Kaguta Yoweri Museveni for winning his 5th elected term as president of Uganda. The National Resistance Movement (NRM) political party continues to govern the pearl of Africa after a dramatic and tense 2016 electoral campaign against 7 opposing party and independent political aspirants.

Museveni Though Museveni and NRM have been a target to beat, they did it again!  Won with a 25.38% gap from defiant rival Dr. Kizza Besigye of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party who obtained a 35.37% of Uganda’s votes.  Since 2001 the two (Museveni and Kizza Besigye)  have been in a close and heated race for the presidential seat with the former beating the latter each time. (Once beaten twice shy. Does this apply here?)

In 2001, political parties were still banned and so 6 independent candidates vied for the big seat. Museveni and Kizza Besigye were the strongest competitors and with a 70.3% voter turn out the incumbent Yoweri Kaguta Museveni won at 69.33% and Kizza Besigye lost with 27.82%. This year (2001) marked the beginning of a rivalry that would get Kizza Besigye arrested on the 14th November 2005 on allegations of treason and rape. The arrest led to demonstrations and riots in Kampala as supporters believed it was a government plot to throw Kizza Besigye out of the elections.

2006 ushered in the 1st multi-party elections. Museveni continued to beat his competition with 59.26 % and Kizza Besigye came second with 37.39%.  One can say this year was a producent of the most tense, dramatic and threatening elections Uganda has had. Besigye later protested the results but his request to dismiss the poll was rejected by the Supreme Court by a 4 to 3 vote.

Come 2011, Kizza Besigye had not given up on the chase to the top seat. Through a hard campaign characterized with multiple arrests, riots and alleged voter intimidation, Besigye’s efforts were not strong enough as he attained a 26.01% of Uganda’s votes and fell on his face the third time. Museveni came out triumphant with a 68.3% of votes in 2011 and now cruises towards a 30 year rule in governance. At his 2016 victory press address in Rwakitura, H.E Yoweri Kaguta Museveni expressed his frustration by some individuals who converge their efforts on the big question; ‘when and how he will retire?‘ but abandon the real issues. Issues of how the country and their people will survive. He assured the country that he’s only goal is to continue the steady progress to prosperity for all.

When asked what his plans are for 2016 -2021….

Do Ugandans actually Vote?

4 out of 10 people I know abandon the ballot paper on the D-day. The reasons they give:

1- the elections will be rigged anyway, why should I vote?

2- I am too busy to go and cast my vote .

3- I didn’t register for elections.

UgandaFrom 1961 Uganda has gone through government changes by elections, war and a military coupe. In 1986, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni seized power following a five year guerrilla Bush war in luweero. From then, elections have gradually become more dramatic with the last three entirely targeted at retiring H.E Y K Museveni.

So is it true that Ugandans don’t vote? The answer to that is inconclusive, but public opinion suggests that a big portion of Ugandans don’t vote because they believe that their opinion or vote doesn’t count. (am as shocked as you are!)

Uganda is a democratic country.  It’s people are free and have rights to live in whatever way they desire. (as stated by the Constitution.)  So why would a part of this young population decide not to vote?

Is it because there has been constant claims of election rigging? A practice that sent many into protest over Milton Obote’s 1980 presidential election. When the late UPC flag bearer was announced president of Uganda , the country was drowned into a period of political strife. A then young and patriotic Museveni protested this win and opted to fight the election fraud from the bush. After a five year shed of blood and struggle, the era of pseudo-democracy was over.

Under the non – partisan democracy, a presidential poll was held in 1996 pitting incumbent Yoweri Museveni against contenders Paul Kawaga Ssemwogerere and Muhammed Mayanja. This was the first election since 1980 and the country liberator Yoweri Museveni won by a landslide. After entering a new Millennium , Museveni won the 2001 election amid claims of voter intimidation and rigging. The same claims have lingered through 2006, 2011 and now most people have drawn back from participating in a process they deem faulted.

After 30 years of one president, a group of people feel they have returned to 1980. A time when Milton Obote seemed hungry to rule Uganda for as many times as he could. Is history repeating it’s self? Do Ugandans who decide not to vote believe that the elections have a pre-slated date and results before the actual day?

No VoteOthers believe Museveni is the only vision bearer and deserves to lead the pearl of Africa with steady progress. Whats your opinion? Come the 18th of February, Uganda goes to the poll another time. I say go and actually vote other than turning a deaf ear to such a significant event. Go VOTE for a fair and free election. FOR GOD AND MY COUNTRY

What is Valentine really about?

ValentineAnyone in a relationship will tell you that Valentine’s day is too much pressure. Sending flowers, candlelight dinners and picking out the perfect gift will consume your thoughts and time for the ultimate goal to make that day memorable. If nothing happened for you on the 14th of February, chances are that you are single or have a cat.

So what is Valentines day really all about? A little bit of history will illuminate the subject. Legend laments that Saint Valentine of Rome was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry. During his imprisonment, Saint Valentine healed the daughter of his jailer, Asterius, and before his execution, he wrote her a letter signed “Your Valentine” as a farewell. (so does Valentine actually mean healer/doctor ? That would make most us of doctors and probably have less disappointed parents.)

Decades back, Valentines day celebrated early saints named Valetinus, and later it was associated with romantic love feasts that featured exchange of flowers and small gifts at a point when writing a love letter was still a big love gesture.

Come 2016, the same day is still about appreciating and being thankful for your partner, friend or family. In whatever way you do it. ( though some ladies will use this day to demand for car keys and a long awaited wedding. True Story) At the end of the day he or she wants to feel special, loved and most importantly not forgotten.

cute-Valentines-day-2016-backgroundValentine is to highlight the already existing care, trust and affection two people share. It’s not a day to redeem bad relationships or miraculously confess your undying love. It’s a continuation of a bond and time line between Valentines. In the end it’s a special day for special people.

I hope you had a good one.

What does Valentine mean to you? Comment below. (I feel the need to remind you)

My First Time

Like the first time, there is no telling how things will go. You will do general cleaning, wear an expensive perfume and still things can terribly go wrong, or right all the way to that bed of roses. UGANDA’s first ever Presidential Debate didn’t fail to entertain and amaze. With OMG moments,  missing candidates to witty speeches, this inaugural event liberated the country from the unfortunate culture of never questioning aspiring candidates to hopefully being more choosey of who to vote. (Lugambo has it some voters prefer money to manifestos. Thoughts?)

Debate

Unwillingly, Uganda looked under the skirt and so much that went unchecked before was exposed. Voters had the opportunity to watch their beloved would be leaders answer the hard questions. Some candidates impressed while others depressed or rather got some of us thinking harder on who to vote.

By this time most Ugandans have analyzed and watched the debate like that favorite Telemundo soap. Picked out their desirable ‘Salvador’ and hated that mother in law who can’t read the signs that she’s no longer welcome.

In this predictable story, 8 candidates vie for the Ugandan presidential seat 2016-2020, but only 7 turned up for the historical event. Was this a waste of time? I think not. Debates have been done by Europe, America and quite recently neighboring KENYA! If that’s not a sign, we ought to encourage awareness, openness and the ability for LEADERS to be accountable to the people not the other way round.

The debate was mainly organized by the Inter-religion Elders Council (something an election body ought to have done) and one would say it was money well spent. As the second debate lurks around the corner, (hopefully all candidates turn up) let me take the opportunity to revisit Uganda’s first attempt.

Candidate JOSEPH MABIRIZI was a superior comic relief and clearly with misplaced but good intentions. From his language, presentation and vision, many voters have compared him to a high school student trying out for the Head-boy position. The candidate failed at many times to answer questions without consulting ‘the people’s manifesto’ (his notes from class) and articulating exactly what he wanted to do. Pardon me, but I think a president should be able to express his views concisely.

Maybe if the debate was in luganda he (Mabirizi) would have made better sense. Unfortunately I am part of many Africans who have been colonized by the queen’s language and forever will believe it (English) superior to my native tongue.

The drama was in full gear when, Ms MAUREEN KYALYA constantly complained of how the world and the debate was unfair to women and other minorities. She claimed that she was never given enough time to answer questions, although the timer was never changed. To Dr. Kizza Besigye and the country’s shock, she accused him of having married Museveni’s sister  and trying to keep the presidency in the first family! At this moment, I was like how can a presidential candidate use precious debate time to engage in door to door gossip?! Ms Kyalya disappointed me greatly and failed to represent the brilliant strong Ugandan women. (Ms Kyalya, find a corner and think about what you did.)

On the other hand, Dr. KIZZA BESIGYE and AMAMA MBABAZI were the usual politicians. Giving evasive answers and the latter dodging them entirely with temporary amnesia. The greater fight from the two giants, is to retire the current president and welcome a new regime into the country, though I am not sure if it’s not a case of getting rid of a black shoe to get another black shoe. (I hope am wrong.)

Surprisingly, the less popular candidates ABED BWANIKA and BENON BIRAARO debated with such charisma and vision. Sadly winning an election in Uganda has proved not to be about the vision or the candidates’ manifesto but other unmentionables. If these two really have this much of good plans for Uganda, they should start showing it even when not president. Maybe then we shall take them seriously.

Empty Seat

Last but not a servant to his people (words by Kizza Besigye), H.E YOWERI KAGUTA M7 declined the invitation to the ground breaking inaugural event with reason of having a tight campaign schedule. As a Museveni believer, I was disappointed by the leader declining such a moment  to reassure the country and show how he actually serves Ugandans not himself and his grand children.

Adding salt to a wound, H.E M7 later expressed his disinterest in the debate, comparing it to high school debates! (You shouldn’t have, Mr Museveni) The big question now is, will the elusive candidate make a dramatic appearance on 13th February 2016 second and final debate?

ALWAYS PUT IT ON.

ABC…. The first three letters to the alphabet carry varying meaning to various individuals. From nursery school I had to memorize and practice these letters to the last letter Z. This would mean good grades, happy parents and most desirably toys and other gifts. As I grew older, the letters ABC changed meaning. These simple letters were harder to practice and later on memorize. AbstainBe faithful and use condoms. Three steps to protect yourself from the HIV epidemic.

1st December is a worldwide recognized AIDS day to raise awareness to the HIV virus and mourn those who have gone too soon by its hand. As kids, we were always cautioned against the disease and told to live by the letters ABC. Twenty years later, HIV is no longer the vividly feared epidemic it was. The fear has been watered down thanks to the vigilance of ABC and God’s mercy to the human race; but the down ward trend of HIV infections should not have you fooled. HIV still exists and is a dangerous disease that can change your life forever. (note that this not a good change).

For most young people nowadays, sex is not water in the desert. You will meet and in the next hour higher chances are that you will hit it. (as the saying goes) This decline in morals and self-respect has   us all exposed and lazy to protect our lives and stay healthy.

not-giant-enough-letter-a

Finding a virgin in 2015 is like searching for the HIV cure it’s self. We have been raised by TV and the internet to believe that having sex early is cool and practicing Abstinence is a thing of the 80’s. Slogans like ‘virginity is lack of opportunity‘ might carry truth but when I was younger I believed it was the right thing to do. (abstaining and not getting a girl pregnant) Even when opportunity presented it’s self, I would say no. Today, we don’t need to search for the opportunity, it looks for us and insists that we use it. So what do you do when offers are surrounding you? (good offers by the way). A, abstain from places, friends and situations that are going to tempt you. For we are all human that can give into temptation. It’s hard to say no but remember that the consequences are hard. Taking ARVs for the rest of your life! We need to ABSTAIN fellas. (as much as we can.)

not-giant-enough-letter-b

So many relationships I know have ended because of cheating. He cheated, she cheated. This has become the norm of dating disasters. One thing I know now that I didn’t then is having multiple partners is expensive, emotionally draining and a healthy risk. (A bomb waiting to explode) It’s always appealing to be the man who can juggle the ladies, but in truth they are using you. For the girls, normally they feel pretty and good about themselves knowing all these guys are running after them. Giving me anything I need but reality check is you need only one partner to live a fully satisfying life. We have one heart to give love, focus on one and stay healthy and happy.

not-giant-enough-letter-c

Buying a condom was the hardest thing to get used to. I always had to prep, wait and get the strength to go to the shop and order one. Even when I reached at that shop ( I made sure the attendant didn’t know me), I had to wait until I was all alone with the shop keeper to order for what I wanted. It was always hard because inside I felt I was about to do something wrong, but when society tells you it’s okay to have sex then all pieces fall in place. No more waiting for NGO condoms that will be discretely  or anonymously handed out. If A has failed, buy that condom and always put it on. (no matter how hot she is) If need be, you should buy a box and keep stock in the house so that moments like, ‘oh I ran out of condoms and I might not get this opportunity again’ cease to happen. We  always need to put it on.

Remember HIV/AIDS is real. We have lost family and friends to the disease. Lets protect ourselves and not swell the number of victims. May God give us guidance, courage and better understanding to stay safe.
